Goethe’s Faust, which Harold Bloom has called “the most grotesque masterpiece of Western poetry,” is a philosophical adventure tale, revolving around a man’s quest for knowledge and experience, which leads him to make a deal with the devil. Drawing from Faust Part One as well as from its wildly fantastical, rarely touched upon sequel, Scapegoat Carnivale’s new adaptation of Faust incorporates video and shadow puppets to bring to life the play’s many settings, ranging from Faust’s study, ancient Greece, and the rocky bays of the Aegean Sea, to Hell itself. These scenes feature witches, talking monkeys, sphinxes, dryads, a troop of lemurs and a chorus of blessed boys.
